Even way back before digital photography, film photographers used different processes to manipulate their images in different ways. Digital images straight out the camera have a very hard flat digital look, so photographers now edit with the aim of adding back some of those film type colours and tones making images punchier and more pleasing to look at to the human eye.

Trends with both shooting and editing change quickly for wedding photography. For example over the last year or so there was a trend that started on Instagram for editing images to be purposely out of focus. It initially started with using low shutter speeds to have the couple in defined focus and other people in the image blurred to represent movement, images were edited to emphasise this. This is one that at first we liked, showing movement in photography is a skill and it definitely added something to some images. However this then evolved into all of the people in the photographs being put out of focus, This wasn’t a trend we personally liked. Quickly this evolved again, and it became even wedding details that were being shot and edited this way and everything became a blurry out of focus mess. Thankfully this one seems to be on the decline as it was simply awful.

This is a trend we jumped on early and are always happy to offer as an option to our couples.

While there was previously a trend for a while not taking group photos at all at weddings, couples have now realised that these are an important part of their wedding day. When else will you have all your nearest and dearest together at one time? Rather than jumping back to previous times when group photos with family and friends were boring and formulaic, couples now want photos with their family and friends that are more fun and upbeat.

Less time is now spent on group photos as well with photographers now advising couples to go for a small number of these and shooting them within 10-15 minutes. Traditionally wedding photographers could spent up to an hour or more doing these. This allows the couples to have more time enjoying themselves with their family and friends and allows the photographer the opportunity to have more times to capture candid moments.

We have always given our couples the option of choosing to head out with us after dinner when the sun is starting to fall as this can be one of the best times of the day for photography. This has now become much more popular with all photographers. While we don’t often get the amazing golden hour light in Northern Ireland that other countries offer, occasionally our luck will be in and conditions will be perfect. Even if conditions aren’t perfect, doing an additional short photo session with the couple in the evening allows a second chance to get stuff with the couple when they are more relaxed. If the weather has been difficult during the day due to rain or high sun its an additional opportunity to just grab some more photos.

You should always be careful with extreme wedding photography trends. Every now and then there will be a trend that will pop up and become very popular and then disappear again a short time later. Examples of this include the recent every photograph being blurry and completely out of focus trend that we mentioned above, selective colour (images being black and white with an element in the photograph being in colour), and even way back in the day believe it or not wedding photographers used to do weird edits, like photoshop couples into wine glasses and lots of other strange things. These sort of things can quickly become a full on cringe fest and a bit embarrassing.

While the photographs from your wedding should reflect the era they were taken in they should always have a timeless element to them, couples should never be left thinking a few years after their wedding, “why on earth, did our wedding photographer do that?” Wedding albums tend to be passed down from generation to generation as well, so keeping the extreme weird and whacky stuff out of them is always a good idea.
