Weddings at Belfast Castle

Photographers who know the castle and its light

Belfast Castle sits on the slopes of Cave Hill, on the Antrim Road, with views over Belfast Lough and the city. It was built by the Donegall family in 1870 and is run today by Belfast City Council. You can marry in the Fisherwick, Ashley or Donegall room, then celebrate in the Chichester Room, the main ballroom, with the gardens just outside.

We have photographed weddings here, so we know how the day moves through the rooms, the staircases and the gardens, and where the light is best for portraits as the afternoon goes on. We photograph the day as it happens, with relaxed portraits in between, and we plan the timings around the light and the weather.

Still deciding on the venue itself? Our Belfast Castle wedding venue guide covers the good, the not so good and our favourite photo spots, and you can see how we work across the city on our wedding photographer in Belfast page.

One wedding a day, so the whole ground floor is yours.

Photography at Belfast Castle

Every corner of the castle, captured

With the ground floor booked for just your wedding, we can take our time and move between the rooms, the staircases and the gardens as the light changes. Here are the places we use on your wedding day and why each one matters.

Location 01

The Grand Staircase

The grand staircase is the elegant entrance for the bridal party, and it makes a classic frame for a first look, an arrival or a few quiet portraits of the two of you. The stonework and the red carpet on arrival look special in photographs before we have even started.

Location 02

The Gardens and Fountain

The landscaped gardens, the fountain and the famous cat garden sit just outside the ground floor rooms, so we have greenery and space to work with without leaving the castle. They are a lovely place for family and bridal party photos close to your guests.

Location 03

The Italian Serpentine Staircase

The original Italian serpentine staircase leads from the Chichester Room down to the gardens. It is a natural way to bring the party outside after the meal, and it gives us a beautiful backdrop for couple portraits and a few relaxed moments with your guests.

Location 04

Views over Belfast Lough

From the castle slopes on Cave Hill we can use the view over Belfast Lough and the city, with the soft light of the evening, for relaxed portraits. Cave Hill weather can change quickly, so we always agree a wet weather plan with you beforehand.

Real weddings at Belfast Castle

See our work at Belfast Castle

Every wedding at the castle is different. Some couples marry in the Donegall room, some choose the smaller Ashley or Fisherwick rooms, and some marry elsewhere and come here for the reception. These are three days we have photographed.

Each one is told from the getting ready and the ceremony to the portraits around the castle, all edited in the same natural, true to life style. Click any photo to see the whole day.

Three ceremony rooms

The Fisherwick Room takes 30, the Ashley Room 50 and the Donegall Room 80. We plan your photography around the room you choose and talk through the layout and the light with you beforehand.

Rain or shine

The castle has plenty of indoor space, including the staircase and the Chichester Room, and we agree a wet weather plan with you beforehand so nothing is a surprise on the day.

The ground floor is yours

Belfast Castle hosts one wedding a day on the ground floor, so we can move between the rooms, the staircases and the gardens without working around another wedding party.

What our couples say

Kind words from Belfast Castle couples

What a couple who got married at Belfast Castle say about having Tommy and Laurene photograph their day.

We did a lot of research into photographers and settled on Pure Photo NI very quickly as their style and lighting were exactly what we were looking for. Tommy and Laurene are the loveliest people and they suggested we try a “first look” because of some issues with day light (with it being a December wedding).

It was the best idea and it was one of our most memorable moments from the day. The photographs are amazing.

Frequently asked questions

Your Belfast Castle questions answered

The things couples ask us most about photography at Belfast Castle. If yours is not here, send us a message or have a look at our wedding FAQ.

Do you know the best spots for photos at Belfast Castle?

Yes. Our favourites are the grand staircase, the gardens and fountain, the original Italian serpentine staircase and the views over Belfast Lough. They are all on site, so we can move between them without losing time with your guests. We plan which ones to use around your timings and the light.

Which ceremony rooms can we choose, and can we marry elsewhere?

The Fisherwick, Ashley and Donegall rooms are licensed for ceremonies, taking 30, 50 and 80 guests, and the Chichester Room is the reception ballroom. You can also marry somewhere else and have just the reception here, which is a popular choice. We photographed Maria and Sean, who married in a church in Newtownabbey and celebrated at the castle. Numbers can change, so check the current figures with the castle.

What happens if it rains on our wedding day at Belfast Castle?

Cave Hill weather can change quickly, so we always agree a wet weather plan with you beforehand. The castle has plenty of indoor space, including the staircase and the ballroom, and the gardens look lovely on a soft grey day. We bring umbrellas and plan the portraits around the weather.

Where do we get ready on the morning of our wedding?

Most couples get ready at home or at a hotel nearby, and the castle includes a bridal refreshment room on the day. We arrive for the bridal preparations in the morning, then spend time with the groom and groomsmen, and we agree the timings with you beforehand.

How far in advance should we book?

As early as you can. We only take on a limited number of weddings each year, and Belfast Castle hosts one wedding a day, so popular dates go quickly. If you have your date, send us a message and we will check it straight away.

Will there be two photographers at our Belfast Castle wedding?

Yes. Tommy and Laurene photograph every wedding together as a husband and wife team. One of us can be with the bride and the other with the groom in the morning, and during the day we capture the moments you would otherwise miss. You can read more about how we work on our wedding photographer in Belfast page.

Is there more than one wedding at Belfast Castle on the same day?

According to the castle, no. The ground floor package is booked for a single wedding, so the whole ground floor is yours for the day. It makes photography easier, because we do not have to work around another wedding party.

Have you photographed weddings at Belfast Castle before?

Yes. You can read about Maria and Sean, Aisling and Antony and Ciara and Robert above. Our venue guide has more about how a wedding day works here, including a timeline.
