10 Years of Pure Photo N.I - A Decade of Capturing Love in Northern Ireland

Today feels like a significant milestone for us as we celebrate a decade of working together as a dedicated husband and wife wedding photography team. Over the past ten years, we have been fortunate enough to capture countless beautiful moments and create lasting memories for our couples, and we are so grateful for the trust they have placed in us. Here's to many more years of pursuing our passion and sharing in the magic of love through our photography.

Before we first started our wedding photography business, we received a lot of well-meaning advice from other wedding photographers:

Working together as a husband and wife will never work. ❌
There are already, way too many wedding photographers. ❌
Weddings are very stressful. ❌
Forget about being creative, you have to do it this way. ❌
You will fall out of love with photography doing weddings. ❌
When it becomes a job, you will hate it. ❌
Only do wedding photography part time. ❌
You can’t rely on recommendations from previous couples to get new bookings. ❌
People won’t book you because you are too cheap. ❌
You won’t survive unless you do wedding fairs, or do this, or do that. ❌
Hide your prices, so that you can adjust them depending on the couple and venue. ❌
Most wedding photo businesses fail in the first year, very few make it to years 2 & 3. ❌
Don’t waste money on having the best equipment, they can’t tell the difference anyway. ❌
Don’t use real wedding photos in your portfolio. ❌

There were hundreds more! Don’t do this! You can’t do that! Never do it that way!

Having been through the process of choosing a photographer for own wedding we wanted to do things differently. We wanted to provide what we could not find when we were looking for photographers for our own wedding.

While we could understand that the advice we were given would maybe make sense from a business point of view, we ignored all of it and decided early on that we would do everything our own way.

Even now 10 years later, we still get a lot of the same comments from other wedding photographers. Doing our own thing, has worked for us though and we still love every single minute!

We Are So lucky!

We absolutely appreciate how lucky we are! Being able to do something we love as our jobs for 10 years, we think is very special. We get just as excited before a wedding now as we did with all of those weddings we shot early on.

It’s been an amazing journey so far! We still look back on the photographs from the weddings we shot in our first couple of years, with a lot of love, as they were the couples that trusted us, when we didn’t have the same level of experience. We were very tempted to pull out all the images from our archive and post our favourites from the last 10 years here but it would have been a mammoth task trying to narrow down photos from over 500 weddings. Doing it Our Way!

While in the last 10 years weddings have changed and our photography has improved so much from those early days, we will always stick to the core values we had when we first set up our business. This means providing everything that we wanted from our own wedding photographers.

Do everything that we can to make sure our couples have the best day of their lives!
Always be honest and transparent with expectations and prices!
Never be afraid to experiment and be creative!
Always do what we say we say we are going to do, when we say we will do it!
Treat, every wedding day as an opportunity to have as much fun as possible!

The Difficult Moments

When you run a small business it’s impossible not to run into challenges that need to be overcome and we of course have faced some challenges over the last 10 years but nothing that we weren’t able to overcome. Like many small businesses the pandemic for example caused us all sorts of issues.

Probably the most difficult thing we have had to deal with during the last ten years was when we lost both of our Dad’s. Putting aside our grief, so we didn’t let any of our couples down both times, was especially difficult.

The most difficult part of being wedding photographers for us, is that it’s very difficult to look upon our business as just work. Pure Photo N.I is us! Everything that reflects on our business, reflects on us personally. It is more than just a job or place of work, it’s our baby and a huge part of our lives.

The Best Job in The World

We will never become rich being wedding photographers, but the job we do is extremely satisfying and makes us very happy. Over the last 10 years, we have made too many great memories to count!

We have shared in some wonderful experiences and documented so many beautiful and emotional moments. We know that for many of our couples the work we have provided them with has meant a lot more to them than just a visual image of a fleeting moment during their wedding day. We know that for many, looking back through their wedding images can be an emotional experience and that is one of the main reasons we love what we do.

Best of all though, is all the amazing people that we have met along the way!
