How Do You Edit Wedding Photos?

For us we always aim to provide our brides and groom’s with images that remain timeless but still fit with the modern vibe for wedding photography. We always want our edited images to be consistent so that couples know when they see images taken by us, they know what to expect when it comes to their own wedding.

Every image we take go through is firstly culled. The images that make the cut are then brought into Adobe Lightroom for basic adjustments before being colour graded in our usual style. In addition to that, if there are any noticeable distractions in the images we will remove them using Adobe Photoshop. We do not skin retouch our images unless there is an obvious distraction that needs to be removed. We don’t want our brides and groom’s looking like completely different people with plastic skin! We want them to look like the best version of themselves, so we always edit with a mind to keeping our photos looking natural and real.

As you can see from the 2 images, we have made basic adjustments including exposure and colour correction before some dodging and burning and colour grading. this would be how most of our images are edited.

How Long Does Wedding Photo Editing Take?

The time required for editing varies based on:

  • Number of images

  • Level of retouching needed

  • Photographer’s workload

We always quote a lead time of 6-8 weeks for couples to receive their wedding photographs, but at quieter times of the year it can be quicker than this. We purposely only take on a set amount of weddings each year so that we can provide a high level of service. The industry average for wedding photo delivery to the client is 8-12 weeks after the event.

Do Photographers Retouch Every Image?

No, photographers only apply detailed retouching to select images. While every delivered photo is enhanced, retouching is usually reserved for key images chosen for albums or prints.

With we always give our couples time to look through our work so that they can get a real idea of how we do things so that there are no nasty surprises. We have never had a couple ask us to re-edit any images.

There are also photographers who do not have a defined style like us. Their edits can be inconsistent and a mish mash of different types of editing. Some of those offer the option for your images to be edited in multiple different ways.

With ourselves if there is something that is obviously a distraction we will remove it. Some photographers offer basic skin retouching to remove blemishes and minor imperfections in key images while others offer this as an additional service.

How many photos do wedding photographers deliver?

Their is not set amount of photographs provided because of the huge range of different types of wedding photography styles. Can I get the raw photos from my wedding?

It makes no sense for any wedding photographer to provide raw files, as they are unfinished and not representative of their final work. The vast majority of couples wouldn’t have the software to be able to open raw files on their computer and they can’t be viewed on other devices. Raw files are the equivalent of old school film negatives basically useless once they have been developed.

How do I know if my photographer edits photos well?

Carefully check their portfolio before booking them. You are looking for a constant level of work, every wedding photographer will also colour grade differently so check through as many images as possible to make sure they are a good fit for you. There is also nothing wrong with asking about their editing style.

What if I don’t like the editing style?
