The amount of images provided by a wedding photographer is something that couples sometimes ask about when they are deciding who they want to photograph their wedding. The question, “how many wedding photographs do I get?” is something that we have been asked a few times.

The quantity of images delivered by your wedding photographer hinges on various factors, including the duration of coverage, the size of your wedding, how much time is given to your wedding photographer for the various parts of the day and the photographer's shooting style.

Why do couples ask how many images they will receive from their wedding?

In our experience their are a few reasons why couples sometimes ask this question:

The most common reason couples ask this question is because they are at the planning stages of their wedding and are reading through various wedding photographers websites trying to make a decision on who they want to photograph their wedding. Some wedding photographers state that they will supply a certain amount of photographs or a minimum quantity of images. It is not uncommon in pricing sections of wedding photographers websites to read minimum 600 images etc. This is something that never really made any sense to us because what happens if their are more than that set amount of images available, do the couple not get those as well? It was only later on in our own wedding photography journey, we found out that some wedding photographers will provide only that set amount and then offer the couple the option to “upgrade” later on down the line so that they can purchase the additional images. Others will say a minimum amount are provided, but usually aim to provide more than that at no additional cost, with the view to providing the couple with better perceived value when they receive them.
Another reason couples sometimes ask this question is because they have read on a wedding blog or in a wedding magazine that this is a question you should ask every wedding photographer before you book them. Unfortunately these types of blogs and magazine’s are often written by people whose only experience of a wedding photographer is when they had their own wedding photographed so they aren’t always the best place to find information on booking a wedding photographer. Some of these articles especially in the age we live in now aren’t even written by a person they are written using A.I.
Occasionally, couples ask this question out of pure curiosity, and for some individuals, the only way they gauge the value of something they are purchasing is by considering the quantity of items they receive in return.

These are the factors that will influence the amount of photos you will
receive from your wedding photographer

Length of Coverage

The length of time your photographer is present significantly impacts the volume of images captured. With ourselves we have two different options for wedding photography coverage, half day and full day. As you would expect couples that book us for full day coverage will receive more images than couples that couples that book us for half day coverage.

There is no industry standard for the amount of photographs captured at a wedding day by photographers or the amount of images then given to the couple. We have seen this discussed in wedding photography circles numerous times and because there is such a huge difference in styles between wedding photographers it is just something that can not be quantified. A recent poll we seen on this same subject had some photographers delivering around 10 images per hour while others were delivering as many as 50 per hour. With ourselves being a husband and wife team we would deliver more than 50 per hour simply because both us are working at most of our weddings.

The amount of guests at the wedding

The number of guests you have at your wedding can also be a significant contributing factor to the total number of images you will ultimately receive. Typically, a larger wedding will mean that your wedding photographer will have many more opportunities to capture more beautiful candid photographs, and there will generally tend to be a greater number of group photos taken. As you would expect a wedding with over 150 guests will likely mean that more photos will be captured than say a micro wedding with 25 guests.

Larger gatherings provide more opportunities for candid and group shots, increasing the total number of images. For instance, a wedding with 130 guests will produce more photos than one with 30 guests.

Type and Complexity of the Wedding

Cultural elements, multi-day celebrations, and intricate ceremonies can lead to a higher photo count. For example, Asian weddings, which often include multiple events and large guest lists, can result in more images being provided, because there is a lot more going on than say a smaller wedding at a local hotel.

It is not always the case but because the ceremony photos are so important and the aim should always be that no moment should be missed, weddings with religious or Humanist wedding ceremonies often result in more photographs than weddings officiated by a registrar were only the legal elements of a wedding ceremony are present

Planned Activities

Weddings that incorporate engaging activities such as lawn games or interactive entertainment after the ceremony will typically offer a variety of additional photo opportunities. These fun events not only enhance the overall guest experience but also provide the chance to capture more images filled with dynamic and candid moments that truly reflect the spirit of the day.

Wedding Day Sequence of Events

Certain parts of the day are more photogenic. The period around the ceremony, including guest arrivals, the ceremony itself, and the immediate aftermath, often yields a higher number of photographs compared to other times. Sometime couples will decided to do a first look and additional elements to the wedding day like this will result in more photos being provided.

Weather Conditions

The weather conditions on the day can definitely have an impact. While embracing the day's conditions, whether sunny or rainy, can lead to unique and memorable images, not every bride and groom are happy to be photographed in all weather conditions. While for us as wedding photographers we would love it if all couples were adventurous regardless of the weather conditions, for us we will always do what the couple wants to do.

Some couples if the weather is poor will want to keep to having the majority of their portraits taken indoors which means a much slower and contrived working style and while that is not our normal way of working, it is important to us that we give all of of our couples the day that they want. Some wedding photographers won’t work in adverse conditions in case it damages their equipment, which can then have an impact on the amount of images provided. Some couples if the weather is not good will unfortunately decide to ditch portraits and photos with their family and friends altogether.

Details and Styling

Weddings that feature more elaborate decorations and intricate styling provide a greater variety of subjects for your wedding photographer to capture, which can significantly enhance the overall photographic experience. This abundance of details and visually appealing elements can potentially increase the number of delivered photos.

Photographer's Shooting and Editing Style

Every wedding photographer has their own unique way of both capturing images and editing them. Some like ourselves focus on candid, documentary style photos while including some beautiful portraits of the bride and groom along with photos with their family and friends, while others only shoot documentary and don’t include any portraits or photos with your guests. Some wedding photographers have a much slower approach to photographing a wedding and excluding the ceremony will only shoot planned heavily posed photographs which often take a lot of time. Photographers like ourselves who value the real moments more than anything else will always provide more images than a photographer who spends the day carting around large lighting equipment and setting up a portraits that take 30 minutes at a time.

Editing style varies hugely as well. For us we feel it’s important to incorporate our editing style into every photograph we provide our clients. Every single photo we provide to a client has been edited, even if it’s just edit the colours and tones to make the image fit to our style. For us consistency in the style of our editing is important, we want anyone that looks at one of our images to know that it’s ours and that if someone is choosing us based on photos they have seen, that they know what to expect. We also edit all of our images ourselves, we don’t use A.I software to blanket edit all of our images and we don’t send images to third party companies or other photographers to be edited. Couples usually don’t understand how wedding photographers edit their images and to be fair, as long as they are happy with the results they probably don’t need too. It might surprise you to know that the majority of wedding photographers do not edit their own images. Many use A.I software that allows them to edit using another photographers style, many also pay for their images to be edited by a third party company and some use other local photographers for editing. Some do no editing at all other than a simple straighten and crop.

Quality Versus Quantity

While the number of photos is important, in terms of all of the important moments from your wedding day being captured the quality and significance of each image are paramount. Most people prefer a curated selection of meaningful photographs that tell the story of their big day compared to a hugely overwhelming quantity of photographs that lack context.

When a couple asks us, “how many wedding photos will I get?” Our answer is usually, “how long is a piece of string?” There are so many different things that contribute towards the amount of images provided that it’s just an impossible question to answer. We could shoot a wedding on a Friday at say for example Larchfield Estate and then shoot a wedding at the same venue the next day and both couples would still get a different amount of images. Every couples wedding is different, they will have a different theme for the day, they will have a different amount of guests, the weather will be different and the couple will have allowed different amounts of time for the various things that happen during the day based on what is individually important to them.

Some wedding photographers will actually provide every single image from your wedding good or bad and some will only provide a small selection of absolutely perfect images. Others like ourselves will provide a wide range of images that have been curated to exclude all of the images of you looking weird and removing duplicate photos. For sure we will sometimes provide images of the same thing because it has been taken from a different angle or because your expression is different but we never provide a ton of duplicate images just edited in different styles. We will also sometimes include images that are not technically perfect, if it is something that we know that will care about. We have photographed hundreds of weddings and we have never once had a couple say that they were unhappy with the amount of images they received, so hopefully that means we are doing something right!
