If we had a penny for every time one of our bride or groom’s said, “I don’t like being photographed” or “I hate having my photo taken” we would be millionaires. It is totally normal to feel this way, you are not alone. Most people feel comfortable grabbing a quick selfie or shooting a TikTok but the idea of being photographed by a professional wedding photographer can make bride and groom’s feel anxious.

Usually their website is the best place to do this, this is where you should be able to to look through hundreds of images from all parts of a wedding day and get a real idea of their photography style.

Couples often visit their wedding venue before the wedding and find a beautiful place and think this is the spot I want photographs to be taken. From a photography point of view however that beautiful place you have found may not work well at all during your wedding day. It is important for couples to trust that their wedding photographer they know how to find the best locations on the day that will offer the best light to ensure beautiful photographs. A photograph taken in a beautiful place that has unflattering light will be a bad photograph, no matter how beautiful the location is.
Brides and grooms also often find photos online captured at their venue and think that looks like a good place for photos. However they often don’t realise that the photo they have seen will have been taken under particular lighting conditions and that on their wedding day the light may be very different. Sometimes couples will find photos on their venues website or social media and think “I love that, that is what I want”. However what they don’t often realise that the photo they have seen on their venues website or social media could have maybe been taken only to advertise the venue and was not captured at a real wedding. Capturing that one photograph may have needed a team of people to set up perfect lighting conditions which can take a considerable amount of time. It is unlikely that you will have an hour or two spare for one photograph on your wedding day.
Couples will also sometimes find photographs online using apps like Pinterest and ask their photographer to recreate it. This is never a good idea. The photo you have found online may have been taken in California in beautiful golden hour light, using models and a team of creatives, there is no way to recreate that as the same conditions will not exist here.
