  • They may not have the capability to deliver on everything that they are offering the old saying, “if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” can apply here.

Here in Northern Ireland the cost-of-living crisis just like with everything else has had an impact on the local wedding industry, which has resulted in a lot of change. Couples are getting engaged but putting off their wedding until later than they would do normally. At the moment there are less weddings taking place than in previous years and smaller micro weddings are becoming more popular, as are elopement style weddings.

One of those changes is the huge increase in wedding vendors that offer multiple services and products. Lots of photographers now also offer video, lots of videographers now also offer photography, wedding cake makers are now also wedding planners and celebrants, some D.J’s are offering room decoration services and there are many other weird combinations of products and services. For a business that is struggling, finding other services and products to offer is a great way to generate extra revenue. Everyone will have their own opinion on if this is good or bad for the industry as a whole and if it is good or bad for couples planning their weddings.

Our Opinion On Expert Wedding Vendors Vs Vendors That Provide Multiple Services and Products

We would never tell one our couples that they should do this or do that, especially when it comes to choosing vendors for their wedding, every couple’s wedding is different and they should have there wedding exactly as they want it. In saying that though, couples often ask us for advice or recommendations for other vendors and we always recommend vendors who are experts in their fields.

In recent times we have seen some photographers who we thought were really good, become really average or even worse get bad, once they started shooting photo and video at their weddings. We can only guess that its very difficult to provide both photo and video at the same time and produce really beautiful work for both. So not only is the video not great compared to what a specialist videographer provides, the standard of photography drops off as well. We have seen exactly the same thing happen with videographers who we used to think were excellent at what they do. That doesn’t just apply to photographers and videographers, we have seen exactly the same thing happening with other vendors who have changed their business and now offer multiple products and services. Vendors who previously always seemed to be very professional and always did a great job, now look strained and under pressure, they turn up late and don’t always do a great job of even the things they were best known for before.

In our opinion, which of course you are free to ignore, we are just photographers at the end of the day, is that the increase of vendors offering multiple products and services is bad for the industry as a whole. Some great vendors are leaving the industry because they don’t want to have to offer multiple services and products and as an industry we are losing their expertise. It also impacts on the wedding day for everyone including every vendor there, when things don’t go as they should.

We also think it’s bad for couples as well. They are not receiving the same consistent high level of service they would have done even a year or two ago from their vendors. Things are going wrong on wedding days more often than ever before, causing the couples stress and impacting on how they enjoy their wedding day.

If a couple asks our advice, we would say that choosing expert wedding vendors makes it much more likely that you will receive a high level of service and have no issues to worry about on your wedding day. In our opinion often businesses which are a, “Jack of all trades, are often a master of none.” Expert wedding vendors don’t just provide a service, they create an experience. They take the time to understand your vision, preferences, and unique story as a couple. Every expert wedding vendor we know including ourselves is extremely passionate about what they do, they don’t treat your wedding as just a way of making money, it is not just a job, they love what they do. Your wedding is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and investing in expertise often pays off in peace of mind and quality.

How to Identify Expert Wedding Vendors

  • Online reviews and testimonials can provide valuable insights into a vendor’s expertise. Check popular platforms like Google Reviews, Bridebook or Hitched, for honest feedback. Focus on recurring themes in the reviews. Are clients consistently praising their professionalism, creativity, and ability to deliver?

  • Have a close look at their marketing material. Are they offering multiple services or products? Are they constantly advertising based mainly around price? Expert wedding vendors will tend to market around the experience you will receive, rather than only cost.

  • A vendor’s portfolio is one of the best ways to gauge their expertise. Look for quality, consistency, and creativity in their past work. For example, a photographer’s portfolio should showcase their individual style. Florists should have a wide range of different types of flowers and arrangements available and venue stylists should be able to show a wide range of very different styles and multiple venues showcased.

  • When reviewing their work, ask yourself, does this align with my vision? Are their skills versatile enough to suit the vibe for my wedding? An experienced vendor’s portfolio will likely stand out with polished, professional results that speak for themselves.

  • Personal recommendations from family and friends are also valuable but always verify credentials and ensure they align with style you really want. Just because a vendor did a great job at your sister or your friend’s wedding does not mean that they will always be the right fit for you.
