Millbrook Lodge is a country house hotel in Ballynahinch, Co. Down, in a former rectory that dates back to the 1800s. It sits in 10 acres of gardens, and you can marry in the Wedding Garden or the Courtyard Suite, with the meal, the evening party and the bedrooms all in the same place.

The advantages and disadvantages of Millbrook Lodge
Every venue has good points and things to plan around. This is what we have noticed from photographing weddings here.
Advantages
- Only one wedding takes place each day, so your wedding is the hotel's only focus. You are not sharing the wedding spaces with another couple, which means more privacy and fewer interruptions.
- You can choose between an outdoor ceremony in the Wedding Garden and an indoor one in the Courtyard Suite. The Orangerie is used for guest arrival and gives you a lovely space to gather before the ceremony.
- The ceremony, the meal, the evening party and the bedrooms are all in the same place, so there is no travelling between venues. The hotel can host up to 350 guests.
- The hotel sits in 10 acres of gardens and the packages include access to the garden for photographs, so you have plenty of choice for portraits without leaving the grounds.
- You can stay on site. There are 16 bedrooms, a complimentary bridal suite and discounted rates for your guests, and many couples stay the night before.
- The hotel has been hosting weddings for over 40 years, and the team looks after the details, including a Master of Ceremonies and working with your suppliers on the day. There is also plenty of parking for guests.
Disadvantages
- With 16 bedrooms, a larger wedding party will need to book other places to stay nearby. Check with the hotel how many rooms are held for your guests.
- The hotel is also a restaurant, so even with one wedding a day there can be other guests in the building. It is worth asking how the public areas are handled on the day.
- Some couples find the wedding packages less personal than a venue where you plan every detail yourselves. Ask what can be adjusted so the day still feels like you.
- The Wedding Garden is weather dependent. The Courtyard Suite gives you an indoor option, and we always plan a wet weather option with you for portraits.
- Winter weddings can be lovely, but daylight is short, so the timings for portraits need careful planning to make the most of the light.

With only one wedding a day, we can use the gardens without working around another wedding party.
These are the places we use most, and we are always happy to talk them through with you before the day.
The Wedding Garden
This is where an outdoor ceremony takes place, weather permitting. We photograph the ceremony quietly from the sides, and use the garden around it for the confetti and the first moments as a married couple.
The Courtyard and the Courtyard Suite
The Courtyard Suite is the indoor ceremony option, with the Courtyard just outside. It is a handy place for portraits close to the rooms, and a good choice if the weather turns.
The gardens
The hotel sits in 10 acres of gardens, and garden photography access is included with the packages. There is plenty of room to find a quiet corner for relaxed, natural portraits away from your guests.
The Orangerie
Your guests arrive and gather in the Orangerie before the ceremony, which makes it a lovely place for candid photographs of everyone catching up. It is a bright room with direct access to the ceremony spaces.

Every wedding is different, but this is how a Millbrook Lodge day with a 1pm ceremony might run. It gives you time for photos in the gardens without anyone feeling rushed, and still gets you back to your guests.
Golden hour moves a lot through the year in Northern Ireland, so we plan your evening light photos around your date. Daylight is shorter in autumn and winter, so for those dates we plan the portraits earlier. It is worth talking the timings through with us before the day.
