About the venue
A Georgian estate with its own Moon Garden
Drenagh Estate is a country estate wedding venue on 1,000 acres outside Limavady in Co. Londonderry. The Georgian house is at the heart of it, with a Moon Garden for outdoor ceremonies, a 19th century walled garden that holds a permanent glass fronted marquee, and woodland and terraced gardens all around.
We have photographed weddings here and it is one of our favourite venues to work at. This guide covers the good, the not so good and the best places for photos, from what we have seen on real days.

The advantages and disadvantages of Drenagh Estate
Every venue has good points and things to plan around. This is what we have noticed from photographing weddings here.
Advantages
- You can choose where to marry. The Moon Garden is an outdoor ceremony space for up to 140 guests, and the Georgian house can seat up to 100 for a ceremony in the Main Hall, with its grand staircase behind you, or in the Morning Room.
- Your reception can be in the permanent glass fronted marquee in the 19th century walled garden, which is heated, has bi fold doors and holds up to 270 guests, or in the house for a smaller day.
- Only one wedding takes place each day, so you and your guests have the whole estate to yourselves.
- You can stay on site. The estate hire includes bedrooms in the main house with bed and breakfast, and the bridal suite has a four poster bed and a free standing bath. Many couples get ready here too, which is great for photos.
- The grounds are a photographer's paradise, with 1,000 acres of gardens, woodland and walled garden to explore.
- Everything about the venue feels luxurious and high end, and the staff are experienced at hosting weddings and always friendly.
Disadvantages
- Limavady is a fair distance from Belfast, so the location can feel a bit far away for some couples and guests. It is worth thinking about travel and timings early.
- The bedrooms on site sleep around 24 people, so most guests will need hotels, B&Bs or Airbnbs nearby. There are plenty close by, but book them early.
- The Moon Garden is outdoors, so the weather matters. The venue can add a canopy, and the house is there as a backup, but it is worth talking through a plan B for your ceremony.
- It is a high end estate, with exclusive use of the venue. Check exactly what the hire fee includes, so you can plan your budget with confidence.

One of the best things about Drenagh Estate is the photo opportunities all over the grounds. From the Moon Garden and the grand staircase in the Georgian house to the walled garden and the woodland, you can get a huge variety of photos without ever leaving the estate.
The seasons add something too. Spring brings blooms to the gardens, summer gives long soft evenings, autumn paints the estate in warm colours, and winter has a cosy, intimate feel.

A Drenagh Estate wedding day timeline
Every wedding is different, but this is how a Drenagh Estate day with a 1pm ceremony might run. It gives you plenty of time for photos in the gardens without anyone feeling rushed, and still gets you back to your guests.
Golden hour moves a lot through the year in Northern Ireland, so we plan your evening light photos around your date. If your ceremony is in the Moon Garden, it is worth agreeing a wet weather plan with the venue in advance.

How many guests can Drenagh Estate hold?
The marquee in the walled garden holds up to 270 guests for the meal and the party. A ceremony in the Moon Garden seats up to 140, and a ceremony inside the Georgian house seats up to 100. Smaller weddings can also dine and dance in the house itself.
Where is the ceremony at Drenagh Estate?
You can choose between the Moon Garden and the Georgian house. The Moon Garden is an outdoor ceremony space, dressed with fairy lights, candles, flowers and drapes. In the house, ceremonies take place in the Main Hall by the grand staircase or in the Morning Room.
Is there more than one wedding a day?
No. Drenagh hosts one wedding per day, so the whole estate is yours and nobody else is on the grounds. It makes photography much easier, because we can use any part of the gardens without working around another group.
Can we stay at Drenagh Estate?
Yes. Estate hire includes 12 bedrooms sleeping 24 guests, with bed and breakfast. The bridal suite has a four poster bed and a free standing bath. Anyone beyond that will need to stay nearby, so it is worth asking the venue how they handle the rest of your guests.
What happens if it rains?
The Georgian house is your backup for the ceremony, and the marquee is fully enclosed with glass fronts, heating and bi fold doors, so the rest of the day carries on whatever the weather. We agree a wet weather plan with you beforehand, and rain often gives us moody, atmospheric portraits in the house and under umbrellas.
Where are the best spots for couple portraits?
The estate has around 1,000 acres, so there is plenty of choice. We love the Walled Garden, the Italian Garden, the Glen, the Heather House and the River Walk, and the Georgian house itself works beautifully indoors. Which spots we use depends on your timings and the light, and we plan it with you on the day.
Can we get ready at Drenagh Estate?
Yes. With estate hire you can get ready on site, and the bridal suite makes a lovely space for the morning. We usually arrive around 9.30am to capture the bridal preparations at the house, then spend time with the groom and groomsmen later in the morning.
How long does the drive take from Belfast?
Drenagh is near Limavady in Co. Londonderry, so allow around an hour and a half from Belfast, depending on traffic. Many couples stay on site the night before, which takes the travel out of your morning and lets us start the day relaxed.
