  • They may also meet with the venue coordinator to ask logistical questions or confirm any restrictions.

  • For indoor events, photographers check ceiling height, wall colours, and available light sources.

  • This kind of planning can help them feel more prepared on the wedding day.

Why do Some Wedding Photographers Scout Venues?

An experienced wedding photographer generally will not usually scout a venue before the actual wedding day. If they have requested to scout the venue beforehand, it is often an indication that they may lack sufficient experience in photographing weddings or do not possess a strong sense of confidence in their abilities and skills.

When we first started photographing weddings we often visited venues beforehand and to we enjoyed those visits as it always helped us build confidence for the wedding we were about to photograph.

Experienced photographers can adapt quickly, especially if they’ve shot at similar venues or work efficiently under pressure and have confidence in their ability.

An experienced wedding photographer will know what to expect when they arrive at your venue without visiting beforehand. They will either have worked at the venue before or have worked at a similar venue before. If it is a venue they have not worked at before they will use online tools like Google Street View and the venue’s website before the wedding to research the venue.

We have been wedding photographers in Northern Ireland for over 11 years and it has been sometime since we last visited a venue before a wedding. We have worked at most of the popular wedding venues in Northern Ireland multiple times and if we haven’t worked at a venue before we will definitely have worked at a similar venue before.

Our style of photography is also very much people focused with the aim of capturing the feeling of the day and telling the story of the day as it unfolds. While off course we will always look to use the most beautiful areas of the venue for portraits those are always easily found at every wedding venue. The locations for us though due to our photography style are less important than capturing the connection betwen the people.

  • An experienced wedding photographer will know that visiting a venue beforehand won’t provide any indication of what the venue will be like on your wedding day. Lighting conditions vary quite a lot and a location that looks great on one day will not work well at all on another.

  • If your photographer like us is aiming to capture the connection between the people on the day, the locations used aren’t as important.

  • An experienced photographer will be very confident in their ability to deal with any situation on a wedding day. They instinctively know how to adapt quickly, troubleshoot issues, and find great angles in unfamiliar places.

  • Experienced professionals understand how to manage lighting, composition, and gear settings on the spot.
    They’re confident working with natural light or artificial light setups, even in changing conditions.

  • Seasoned photographers have worked in a wide range of environments, indoors, outdoors, low light, harsh sun, historic buildings, modern venues and are ready for any situation.

  • An experienced professional wedding photographer will have a wide range of equipment to choose from on the day so that they cap adapt to any situation needed. They won’t need to visit a venue to determine what equipment to bring along.
