Couples tastes have changed a lot in recent years as well with many couples opting for weddings that are smaller and more intimate and not just because of cost. Many couples are choosing venues that aren’t traditional wedding venues or having elopement style weddings on our beautiful Causeway Coast.

According to the report the average age of couples getting married in the U.K is now 34.4. this is a slight increase over previous years and this the average age of couples getting married in the U.K has been trending upwards for sometime.

How Long are Couples Staying Engaged For, Before they Get Married?

The length of time a couple is engaged for before getting married has been decreasing for a couple of years now. The average length of time a couple is engaged for in the U.K has dropped again to an average of 26 months, however this may be influenced some what by the pandemic years. The most popular month of the year for couples to get engaged is still December, it has always been popular for couples to get engaged over the Christmas period.

How Many Guests are Couples Inviting to their Wedding?

On average 73 guests are invited to a wedding, this number has been slowly declining for the last few years. There has also been a large decrease in the amount of evening guests invited though, with an average of 21 people now being invited to the party but not the wedding. Part of the reason for this is due to cost, but also couples are also being a lot more selective about who they invite to their wedding.

August is still the most popular month of the year to get married, although couples are getting more price conscious than ever when choosing their wedding date. It has always been the case that mid week weddings are less expensive and now with 1 in 3 Gen Z couples choosing to get married Monday-Thursday this is only going to increase over the next few years.

Having the wedding ceremony at the same location as the wedding reception for a few years now this has been the most popular option, with an average 72% of couples choosing to have their wedding ceremony at their reception venue.

We can understand why, this can often make for a less stressful day. When everything happens at the same venue a lot of the time pressures disappear, due to not needing to worry about travelling between different locations and how much time that can eat up on the day. Only 14% of couples chose to have their wedding ceremony at a place of worship and outdoor weddings are more popular than ever before.

Obviously as Northern Ireland wedding photographers this part of the report is interesting to us. We have always felt that providing our couples with the information they need to feel comfortable with us was key, so it is nice to see that this is important to couples as well.

We also found it interesting when photographers in particular pretty much live on instagram etc. that couples aren’t that bothered about social media activity when it comes to choosing their photographer. Although I suppose you could say that social media helps couples learn our personalities and feel more comfortable with us which is is very important.

The data on the report shows that on average couples spent £1,484 on wedding photography not including a wedding album. This means that we are around the average in terms of the cost of wedding photography with our half day option costing less than the average and our full day options costing a little bit more.

We have always felt that having our prices available on our website for couples to compare was important, even though lots of other wedding photographers and vendors have told us not to do this. We have always felt that if we make us as much information easily available as possible, it is much more likely that couples will appreciate how upfront we are and be more likely to book us.

The report bears this out with 59% of couples saying that they would not contact a venue or vendor if pricing was not available online.

Most Popular U.K Wedding Venue Types

Hotel style wedding venues have taken their first dip in popularity in recent times with 23% of couples now choosing to get married at a hotel. Barn type venues have seen the biggest increase with 27% of couples choosing a barn style venue. Country House style venues have also seen an increase to 16%.

As we have already mentioned non traditional wedding venues and elopement style weddings are more popular than they have ever been before and it’s expected that this trend will continue as we move into 2027 and beyond. Engaged couples today are embracing flexibility and exploring a wider range of options for their wedding day. Couples are widening venue choices beyond barns, country houses, castles and stately homes. Only 19% stick to one type, most explore varied options to match style and practical needs.

The typical cost of a wedding in Northern Ireland is around £18,564, not including the price of an engagement ring or the honeymoon.
