For most newly engaged couples, planning a wedding can often seem overwhelming. Knowing when you should be booking the various vendors needed to make the most of your wedding day is important. Most couples tend to book their venue, a celebrant and then a wedding photographer.

Timing is one of the most important parts of wedding planning. Photographers often take bookings more than a year in advance, especially for popular dates. Most of our couples book twelve to eighteen months ahead of their wedding date, and some book more than three years out. Booking early locks in a lower price, since our rates are likely ti go up each year year. Booking early ensures you have access to your preferred professional photographer and helps to prevent any disappointment.

A popular photographer’s calendar fills up pretty quickly during the main wedding season, usually spring to autumn. Delaying can limit your options, forcing you to settle for someone who may not align with your style or budget. By securing your wedding photographer well in advance, you not only ensure their availability on your special day but also lock in the current pricing, effectively avoiding any potential rate increases that may occur closer to your wedding date.

Booking early also allows you time to plan for things like engagement sessions, so that you get to know your photographer better. An engagement session can also builds trust and communication between you and your photographer, resulting in more natural, personal photos on the big day.

Availability During Peak Wedding Season

Most weddings happen between May and October. These months are highly competitive for photographers, venues, and other vendors. If your wedding is scheduled to take place during the busy wedding season period, it is highly recommended to book your preferred photographer at least 12 to 18 months in advance to secure availability.

Some photographers like ourselves will only take a limited number of clients each season to maintain quality. Waiting too long could mean missing your first choice entirely. If you’re planning a wedding during peak wedding season, securing your preffered photographer early should be at the top of your checklist.

Securing Your Preferred Style and Photographer

Every photographer has a signature style whether it’s documentary, fine art, or traditional. Early booking gives you time to review portfolios, compare aesthetics, and choose one that fits your vibe. Booking late could mean that you have no option but to choose someone who has a very different style than you prefer.

Booking ahead gives both you and your photographer time to plan creative concepts. You can discuss any must-have shots to make your photos truly personal. It also gives you time to visit any potential photo locations at the same time of year you could potentially be there and see if they are really what you want.

Ideal Timeline for Booking Your Photographer

Booking your wedding photographer should ideally take place soon after you have secured your wedding venue. Photographers are often among the very first vendors that couples choose to book during their planning process. To help you navigate this important step, here’s a clear breakdown of when to book your photographer depending on the stage of your planning and the specific type of wedding you are having.

2 - 3 Years Before the Wedding

If you book your wedding photographer 2-3 years before your wedding it’s pretty likely that you will be able to book your first choice. This is when availability will likely be at its very best for most wedding photographers.

12 to 18 Months Before the Wedding

This is a great time frame for booking and by far the most popular. You’ll have a wide selection of photographers to choose from and flexible pricing options. If your wedding falls on a bank holiday weekend or during peak season, this window is essential and is probably the latest timeframe you can book if you want a particular style of wedding photographer.

Booking this early also still gives you time to plan engagement photos, which are great for invitations or decor.

6 to 9 Months Before the Wedding

This is still a reasonable time to book, especially for off-peak weddings. Many talented photographers will have open slots, especially for weekday or winter dates.

Use this time to finalise your photography package, confirm logistics, and plan backup weather options if needed.

Last-Minute Bookings

Booking a photographer at the last minute, within a few months of your wedding can be stressful. Availability will be very limited, especially during busy months. However, it is still doable. You could find for example a photographer you like who had a previous cancellation for your date and is still available.

You may however have to compromise on certain preferences, such as style, experience and quality of work. Always verify their experience, portfolio, and contract details to avoid any nasty surprises. You will find it easier to find someone you like with availability if your wedding is on a week day or during the winter months.

Factors That Influence Booking Times

Location and Venue Popularity

Weddings in high-demand locations like major cities or scenic destinations require earlier bookings if you want a photographer who is local to the area.

The location you are getting married in can also effect availability. Say for example we have a wedding or an elopement on a Friday on the Causeway Coast, it is unlikely we would take on another booking the day after in Enniskillen. As that would mean two very long days in a row in terms of travelling time. If it was two local weddings, two days in a row we would be happy to accept both bookings as we know we wouldn’t be exhausted and still at our best.

Photographer Demand and Experience Level

Highly sought-after photographers often receive multiple bookings per day during busy seasons. The more established they are, the faster their diary will fill up. If you’ve found a photographer whose style you love, reach out as soon as possible before someone else does. Every year there is always at least a couple of dates that we get a lot of enquiries for. For example for 2026 that date is the 22/8/26, we have had so many couples get in touch about that one date. One of our friends who is a wedding photographer has had a similar amount of enquires for the exact same date.

Wedding Date Flexibility

If your date is flexible, you may find more availability. Off-peak months, weekdays, or morning ceremonies often open opportunities to work with popular photographers who would otherwise be booked.

How Booking Your Wedding Photographer
Early Can Save Money

Booking early can often mean saving money. Wedding photographers usually work two different ways. We for example work on a basis of the price you see advertised on our website is the price you pay regardless of your booking date. So if a couple for example were to book us now for a wedding in 2028 they would pay the same price as a couple who was booking now for a wedding in 2026. Our prices over time will increase because our cost of doing business increases all the time and we have to change pricing to reflect that. So if someone books us in 2025 for a 2028 wedding it is likely they will pay less than a couple who book us in 2027 for a wedding in 2028.

Some photographers work differently, they will have set prices which increase depending on what year you are getting married in. Even then however, if you lock that price in early, prices may still increase way beyond that by the the time it gets closer to your date.

Lock In Contracts and Booking Fee’s Early

Once you’ve chosen your photographer, secure your booking with a signed contract and deposit. This guarantees your date and clarifies details about deliverables, payment terms, and cancellation policies.

Aim for a minimum of 12 to 18 months ahead for peak season weddings, or at least 6 to 9 months for off-peak.
