La Mon Hotel Weddings
The La Mon in Comber is a hotel style wedding venue. It stands as a testament to timeless elegance and picturesque beauty. We got married at the La Mon Hotel ourselves on a roasting hot day in May. We were able to have our wedding ceremony outdoors which wasn’t so much of a thing back then. When we first started photographing weddings the La Mon Hotel was top of our list of venues we wanted to work at. Since then we have probably photographed more weddings at La Mon than at any other venue we have worked at.

What are the advantages of the La Mon Hotel for a wedding?
Being a good sized hotel wedding venue, there is lots of onsite accommodation available. Lots of brides stay at the hotel the night before and get ready from there on the morning of the wedding.
They have a dedicated room for wedding ceremonies so you can have both your ceremony and reception at the venue as well as having the option for an outdoor ceremony.
The room used for ceremonies is nice and bright making ceremony photography easy here.
The hotel has its own grounds which are suitable for wedding photography which means you may not need to travel elsewhere for photographs.
The food here is always great!
They can cater for two weddings a day which provides additional availability.
The location is close to Belfast and surrounding areas.
What are the disadvantages of the La Mon Hotel for a wedding?
While being able to host two weddings a day is great for availability, this does also come along with some disadvantages. Many couples prefer not to share their venue with another couple. You may well on the day see the other wedding party and their guests, which for some couples can be an issue.
While the ceremony room is nice and bright with huge windows providing good light for photography, a lot of couples mention the “artwork” displayed around the room, which many seem not to like.
While the La Mon Hotel does have some grounds around the hotel, some wedding photographers find it a difficult venue to create at and will advise couples to look for an alternative location for their portraits. It has never been a problem for us, maybe because we are so familiar with the venue and know all the best places to use.
Couples sometimes prefer a more personalised touch for their wedding day and La Mon Hotel's set wedding packages might not cater for every couple. If you prefer a unique and customised wedding experience, you may find the venue's options too restrictive. This to be fair would be the same with most hotel style wedding venues in Northern Ireland.
While you could say this about a lot of hotel style wedding venues, there are often a lot of hotel residents around and they can sometimes mix with the wedding party.
Wedding photography at the La Mon Hotel
While the La Mon doesn’t have a huge range of grounds like a lot of wedding venues, there are a few small areas that can work very well for photos, when you know where they are and how to best make use of them. While a lot of those areas to the naked eye don’t look suitable at all, with careful composition a skilled photographer can make the mundane, great.
When we work at La Mon, we tend to use the area near to the wedding ceremony room or the Ballygowan Suite as it is called here after the ceremony for portraits with the bride and groom as well as family and bridal party photos. Later in the evening we like to use the area on the right hand side of the main building, this is actually the area were our own wedding ceremony took place. We don’t tend to use this area during the day as light in that area is much better in the evening.
Alternative location for wedding photography for La Mon Hotel weddings
Sir. Thomas & Lady Dixon Park: Photo location for La Mon Hotel weddings
Lady Dixons as it’s known locally is the most popular choice for a photo location for couples who are getting married or for those just having their wedding reception at the La Mon Hotel and don’t want to use the grounds at the hotel. While it isn’t close by, it isn’t too far away to make travel difficult. With its exceptional natural beauty and romantic ambiance it is not hard to see why. Situated between Lisburn and Belfast, this beautiful park offers a captivating backdrop for wedding photography with lots of different areas to explore.
The park is best known for its stunning rose gardens, carefully manicured lawns, and a myriad of mature trees, creating an ethereal atmosphere that adds a touch of magic to your special day. We personally love the less explore meadow that most people don’t even realise is there.
Apart from its obvious appeal, the park offers practical advantages as well. The park's accessibility, ample parking, and well-maintained facilities make it convenient for couples and their photographers. Additionally, the park's size ensures that you can find a quiet and private spot to capture intimate moments away from the hustle and bustle. If you want to use this location you will need to gain confirmed permission from Belfast city council.
Evening wedding photography at the La Mon Hotel
As we already mentioned there there is an area at the La Mon Hotel we like to save for later in the evening. This area is quite wide open so it isn’t the best choice to use it during high sun. This is the area where got married outdoors here ourselves. Sometimes for giggles we will show our couples some of our cringey wedding photos taken here and recreate them, always gets a few laughs.
